Mr J Cullen is the Head of Rugby at Sevenoaks School in Kent and is taking on the Commando Series 18 Obstacle 6km course with 70 of his students this week.

We asked him a few questions ahead of the day.

Q: Why did you choose the Commando Series event for your pre-season training exercise?

Being a rugby man and having been involved with a number of pre-season programmes, I’ve always found that training which involves both mental and physical challenges was the most rewarding for team sport. It creates lasting memories and it’s hugely satisfying once completed, realising the sense of camaraderie accomplishment.

Q: Were you motivated by Clive Woodward’s strategy in 2003?

Most definitely! They were a special group of players but this helped to give unity and direction which played a major part towards future successes.

Q: How many students will be taking part?

There will be 70-80 students taking part and ages will range from 13-18.

Q: How do you think your students will fare with the rigorous 18 obstacle/6km course?

I’d like to say all of them, however due to the range of ages that’ll be attending, I just hope that they all come away from it with huge amounts of fulfilment and understand that hard work pays off.

Q: Will you be asking the Marine instructtors to ‘Treat them like Commandos’ or ‘Just get them round’?

I’d be delighted if they could all experience life as a commando for the afternoon.

Q: Will you be taking part?

I do plan to take part and I’m sure other staff will be interested in taking part. Cannot say no to a challenge!

Q: What is your plan for the Rugby Team in 2016?

We always aim to achieve 50% win success across all age-groups, however my plan will be to increase numbers and help students to create a passion for the sport. Hoping that they realise how much being part of a team and pushing themselves can contribute to so many different successes, both on and off the field.
