Commando MEMORABLE DATE: The Raid on Zeebrugge

Commando MEMORABLE DATE: The Raid on Zeebrugge

23 April 1918

This time 98 years a go, there was an operation to deny the Germans the use of the canal at Zeebrugge, a port in Belgium that was conducted jointly between the Navy and the Royal Marines.

The objective was successfully achieved, with troops landing on the Mole under heavy fire and positions held to allow others time to block the canal. Two Victoria Crosses were awarded, by ballot, to Royal Marines following this operation.
